Whether you enjoy soaking in the tub for hours on a Sunday afternoon or if you just dash in for a quick shower before shooting off to work, the bathroom is the one room of the house that all members of the family are sure to use on a regular basis.

Therefore, even if it may be the smallest room in your home, there's no excuse to neglect the bathroom when redecorating or redesigning your house.

Practicality is key when designing a bathroom, so the first step is to decide on large features such as the bath and shower and to install vital fittings including bathroom taps and towel radiators.

Once all the essential features are in place, it's time to get a little creative and make the interior design your own.

And, according to Tanya Macpherson, assistant editor at Essential Kitchen Bathroom Bedroom, tiling can be a great way to give your bathroom that personal touch.

"I think it is a very easy way to change the look of your bathroom and it is a good way to add interest or colour or different finishes," she says.

"Tiles are no longer just available in ceramic and different colours; you can get them in stone and you can get different finishes of stone."

However, when picking out your tiles there's no need to stick to traditional styles and colours so don't be afraid to experiment a little and be bold with your tiling design.

"You can get them carved in different ways and different angles so that they bounce the light around," Tanya adds.

"You can get glare and mosaics, so there are a big variety of tiles available. Rather than just being in one area, a lot of the time there is a big wall clad in really interesting tiles to help to add interest to the room."
