Forget neutral creams and beiges when decorating your bathroom this spring. Colour is making a comeback and it can really lift your spirits as you getting ready in the morning.

Just imagine taking a 6am shower surrounded by sunny yellows or soothing aquas. Surely that's more appealing than staring at plain white tiles with your sleep-clogged eyes?

Interior designer Linda Barker reckons colour has a "spring clean" effect in the home, so it could be a great addition if you're not ready to buy a new bathroom suite just yet, but still want an instant update.

Paper one wall in a bold hue or leave the main colour scheme neutral and bring in a few bold splashes of colour with accessories such as towels, toothbrush holders and soap dishes.

Indeed, don't underestimate the power of these tiny touches. Doing something as simple as fitting a new basin or bath taps could make a real difference to the overall look of the room.

Linda said raspberry pinks and teal blues are en vogue at the moment and work really well in smaller rooms such as bath and shower rooms. They look great together too!

But before you get out those paint pots and brushes and don your overalls, you should know that wallpaper is where it's at.

"Wallpaper is having a bit of resurgence at the moment," the designer stated.

"The feature wall look is very key. It doesn't cost a fortune and it is certainly a lot easier than buying a whole room's worth of wallpaper."

Try it on a back wall, away from the shower and the sink, or use brightly coloured tiles to create your feature wall around the bath.

There are no rights or wrongs - just experiment! As long as you've got the basics sorted with a good quality bathroom suite, mixing things up with a bit of colour can be an annual spring thing.
