As one of the most used rooms in the house, it is not surprising that the bathroom consumes a great deal of energy, from both electricity and heating as well as water usage.

However, with energy prices increasing, making the move towards an energy efficient bathroom in your home will not only help the environment but could also be much kinder to your bank balance.

And according to Ryan Notz, chief executive of Mybuilder.com, it doesn't have to be complicated, as by taking a step back and considering the basics it's possible to significantly reduce energy use around the home.

"It's a bit boring to say, but we haven't done the basics right well enough in this country," he says.

The expert suggests taking a look at your heating systems and to ensure that heat is not being wasted, and if necessary you may want to consider updating your appliances and features, such as towel radiators, heated rails and even your boiler.

"Underfloor heating is fairly popular," he adds. "New, efficient boilers and good old fashioned gas boilers [are also good] - upgrading your boiler can save a lot of money. Again, it does come down to cost and the return on investment."

Updating your lighting system is also a fairly cheap and simple way to improve energy efficiency in the bathroom.

LED lights installed either in the ceiling or around features such as mirrors will not only help to cut costs on your bills, but are also a great addition to an attractive interior design scheme.

Finally, if you're going to do your bit for the environment and go green in the bathroom, you're going to have to cut back on your water use.

This can be as simple as remembering to turn off the bathroom taps when brushing your teeth or swapping your daily bath for a shower.

But for more significant results, it's worth looking into water-saving appliances - such as a dual flush toilet or shower heads and taps with a high energy efficiency rating - and then sitting back and watching the pounds drop off your utility bills.
